Energy Sept 2004 - July 2005

We identified that we have a real problem with lights being left on around the school when rooms are empty as shown here.

The pupils have produced posters asking people to turn lights off. These are displayed next to every light point in the school except those in corridors where lights need to be left on for safety reasons.

As part of the energy audit, the Science Lab windows were identified as being extremely inefficient as some do not close and even those that do have little insulating properties.

The Eco schools committee met with the Headmaster, Mr Morris and the problem with the windows is that they are listed and so can only be replaced with identical ones and this will be extremely expensive. Although the school has some funds, we need County Hall to contribute the rest and this has not yet happened.

Ray Harrington-Vale from the Footprint trust visited the school and presented a talk called `Cradle to the grave` to all year 7 students on a class by class basis as part of a topic on renewable energy. Feedback from staff was very positive.

School Travel Plan

All pupils in the school completed a transport survey on the YoungTransnet website as part of their ICT lessons. The data collected was used to generate graphs showing how pupils in different year groups travelled to and from school and identified some of the issues preventing them from travelling to school in a more sustainable manner. We will now use this data in the Autumn term to complete our School Travel Plan and identify areas where we can promote and increase sustainable travel.

We organised cycling proficiency courses for the Autumn Term 2005.

We held a Green Travel Day raising £500 for the Meningitis trust. The idea behind the day was that staff had to come into school in a sustainable manner and if they did use a car, a hefty parking fee was imposed. Many staff bought into the idea: Headmaster, Mr Morris arrived on a scooter, Mr Dale a pogo stick, Mr Peace cycled from Sandown and Mrs Morris came on horseback.

The Isle of Wight County Press were there to photograph the shenanigans and gave the day an excellent write up!

Our first meeting!

The first meeting of the Nodehill Eco-schools committe took place on 30th November 2004 with representation from pupils, teachers, parents and the governing body. The meeting was chaired by Mr Peace and minutes were made by the pupils.

We talked about the environmental audit the pupils had carried out and how we were going to address the issues identified during that process.

The pupils suggested we hold a school competition to see who could come up with a mission statement or eco-code for the project.

The Nodehill Eco Code

The Eco-schools group has come up with a mission statement for our project - our Eco code.
