Litter 2006-2007

More bins please!

When asked why we sometimes had a litter problem on the playground, pupils said they wanted more bins and brightly coloured ones at that. Of course, we obliged and we now have these lovely bins at regular intervals on the playground.

Making litter picking a positive experience

The subject of dropping litter has been discussed with pupils in whole school assemblies and year assemblies along with aspects of work done in PSHE and Citizenship. As a school we are trying to illustrate to pupils just how much difference it can make by picking litter up and having clean areas.

To reinforce this, the Working Group came up with the idea of buying some grippers and giving one class responsibility for the big playground and one class responsibility for the small playground each week. This has had excellent results because the pupils really take a pride in clearing the playground of any rubbish and leaving it gleaming after break!

Action plan litter 06-07

  • Develop perception of the litter problem – record litter in different areas around the school, illustrate on a map in prominent location – possibly translate the grades into a numerical system that can show the improvement in cleanliness over time.
  • Promote litter reduction and prevention as an ongoing process involving all members of the school community.
  • Promote litter clearing as a positive environmental action rather than a punishment – possible talking bin?
  • Buy some grippers and have litter patrols each break time – one class responsible for each playground each week.
