Water 2006 - 2007 (cont)

Report your leaks!

Dscn0071 The working group have produced labels to alert people as to the importance of identifying water leaks and the procedure for reporting leaks so that we can cut down on water wasteage as must as possible.

The signs have been put in position next to every sink in the school such as that shown in this photo.

Water use by Nodehill

We have continued to log our water usage and produced a graph to show it. The graph below shows our water usage and indicates we compare favourably with the national average school water consumption of 4000 litres per pupil per year. We have calculated our water consumption to be 2209 litres per pupil per year in 2004-2005 and 2144 litres per pupil per year in 2005 - 2006!

Water 2006 - 2007

So far this year we have been very productive changing our practice regards using water and the way in which we think about it.

Southern Water

Water_saving_tips_3

On the back of last years hosepipe ban, we started the year publicizing the things that we could do to save water by using less on the basis that with climate change, water could become increasingly rare. Southern Water provided us with this leaflet of 10 water saving tips at home.

We applied for a grant from Southern Water to buy some water butts to collect water from our drainpipes. Southern water provided us with 3 water butts free of charge and these can be seen in the photos in the school grounds section.

Bog Hogs!

Dscn0035 The bog hog or save a flush bag has been a prominent feature of our work. The idea behind these is that they sit in the toilet cistern and expand to take up the space which 1 litre of water would occupy. Every time you flush you use 1 litre less water.

The Footprint Trust had a stall at the Christmas Fayre to promote the work they do towards sustainability and they gave out free bags to all who wanted them. They gave out 25 at the Fayre which would save roughly 100,000 litres per day.

This figure is based on the fact that each bag saves 1 litre per flush and industry figures suggest 5 flushes per person per day. If you take an average household of 2.5 people, that is 12.5 flushes or 12.5 litres per day which you then multiply by 365 (days in the year).

Southern Water then provided us with a box of these bags to give to all parents and staff who wanted them such as Mrs Woodford and Mrs Buckler who have been saving water every time they flush!

We have also put the Save a Flush bags in all of the 'old type' toilet cisterns in the school. If you would like a free Save a Flush bag for your cistern get in touch with the school and we will supply it.

Action plan water 06-07

  • Call S. Water - Bog Hogs in all toilet cisterns and supplies to give to parents and poss local businesses.
  • Reporting procedures for leaks etc
  • Water bills – continue to monitor and plot month to month in order to compare 2005-6 usage with 2006-7 by month

Water Sept 2005 - July 2006

We continued to monitor water usage by the school and identified ways in which we may be able to reduce this usage.

Water_fountains_mar_2006 We installed water fountains for pupils to drink from and promoted the reuse of plastic bottles for pupils to carry with them throughout the day.

Once again, a group of year 6 pupils took part in World Water Day. They were instructed in water testing by Ken and Jim from Southern Water who have to perform these tests as part of their jobs and put the test results in perspective both locally, nationally and globally for the pupils.

Water Sept 2004 - July 2005

We have started to monitor our water usage and next year our aim is to compare our usage with the national average.

We participated in World Water Day, where a group of year 6 pupils went down to the River Medina and performed a variety of tests on the water to determine its quality. The results were sent off to be amalgamated as part of the global World Water Day.
