So far this year we have been very productive changing our practice regards using water and the way in which we think about it.
Southern Water
On the back of last years hosepipe ban, we started the year publicizing the things that we could do to save water by using less on the basis that with climate change, water could become increasingly rare. Southern Water provided us with this leaflet of 10 water saving tips at home.
We applied for a grant from Southern Water to buy some water butts to collect water from our drainpipes. Southern water provided us with 3 water butts free of charge and these can be seen in the photos in the school grounds section.
Bog Hogs!
The bog hog or save a flush bag has been a prominent feature of our work. The idea behind these is that they sit in the toilet cistern and expand to take up the space which 1 litre of water would occupy. Every time you flush you use 1 litre less water.
The Footprint Trust had a stall at the Christmas Fayre to promote the work they do towards sustainability and they gave out free bags to all who wanted them. They gave out 25 at the Fayre which would save roughly 100,000 litres per day.
This figure is based on the fact that each bag saves 1 litre per flush and industry figures suggest 5 flushes per person per day. If you take an average household of 2.5 people, that is 12.5 flushes or 12.5 litres per day which you then multiply by 365 (days in the year).
Southern Water then provided us with a box of these bags to give to all parents and staff who wanted them such as Mrs Woodford and Mrs Buckler who have been saving water every time they flush!
We have also put the Save a Flush bags in all of the 'old type' toilet cisterns in the school. If you would like a free Save a Flush bag for your cistern get in touch with the school and we will supply it.
